Iogann Paul Raul, a Frenchman, working in 1860-1880 in Odessa (Imperial Russia), was one of the brightest figures of Russian photography of that time. His pictures of the Caucasian, Crimean and Volga ethnographic portraits, as well as, antiquities have been collected in albums for education of tsarevitches at the court of Emperor Alexander III. They are now stored in the State Public library and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. Iogann Paul Raul was a pedantic professional always carrying with himself the camera with a 30cm X 40cm glass negative 30 X40. He also received special orders for portraiture of the Highest dignitaries and group portraits in landscape. Raul accompanied P. D.
