OneOne of the most ancient civilizations, Armenia is famous for the Armenian Diaspora as a result of the Genocide of 1915 and, more recently, as a country shattered by an earthquake in 1988. Arguably, only small academic communities are aware of the achievements of the Armenians in architecture, art, and literature.
Armenia's culture is unique in many ways. First, it is so much greater than the nation itself that it overwhelms and dominates all other features of the Armenian ethnic identity. Second, it is incredibly diversified. During its more than 2,000 year-old history, the country of Armenia has gone through so many radical changes in size and political status, that its culture has been influenced by and has influenced many other cultures.
While many books on Armenian culture have been published all over the world, and hundreds of websites currently exist that are dedicated to one or more fields of Armenian culture, we feel that there is still a need for a single comprehensive source of credible and easily accessible information on Armenian culture organized in such way that a visitor is able to read, view and download texts and images.
With that in mind, www.armgate.org has undertaken to create the Gateway to Armenia°s Cultural Heritage. This site combines elements of a dedicated website with a portal. The former aims at providing a basic background on Armenian culture, while the latter gives an opportunity for webmasters to link their relevant sites, thereby consolidating many individual efforts into one.
