| Nicoli Marr spent several years in very fruitful archeological research and excavation in the medival capitol of Bargratuni's Armenia - Ani which is located on the right bank of the Akhourian River some forty kilometers southwest of Alexondropal, currently known as Gumri. Ani became the center of studies, not only for monuments in Ani itself, but also for a number of other monuments in the vicinity. It is natural that the basilical temple of Ererouk, which, is located not far from Ani on the left bank of the Akhourian attracted the attention of Marr in the early years of his systematic excavation at Ani. In 1907, Marr undertook systematic studies of the basilca at Ererouk.. In the next year he studied the sructures similar to the Ererouk basilcia. His two years of studies resulted in the writing of a book in 1910 with later editions and corrections in 1914. The Academy of Science in Armenia finally published this book in 1969. Plates with original photographs were printed and prepared for this book during Marr's lifetime and were kept in archives before 1969. There are only 600 copies of this book. The book, as it was habitual to soviet era publications, was not copyrighted, and I am taking advantage of this absence to publish on this sight the original photographs, which were prepared by Marr's expedition. These images are particularly valuable because they are the earliest available photographic materials of Ererouk. |
