For thousands of years the basin of Lake Sevan (the largest in the Caucasus, situated at an altitude of 1916 metres) was the cradle of many successive civilizations. The basin of the lake is scattered with rock paintings, sculptures and work of architecture including fortifications, remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages, Urartian and Aramaic inscriptions, monasteries, churches, castles, bridges and cemeteries.
